Annual Progress Report 2008
The Reproductive Health Programme was established in 1997 with its main focus on Maternal Mortality Reduction and specific emphases on supporting Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care, Family Planning and STIs Prevention and Management. It is the principal implementing agency for UNFPA funded activities particularly in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and implemented the 2008 Annual Work Plan of the GOSL and UNFPA 4th Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP), 2008-2010. Health Minister Leads Delegation to Oncho Meet in Tanzania
Health and Sanitation Minister, Mrs Abator Thomas is leading a two-man delegation to the twelfth Joint Action Forum (JAF) of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Joint Action Forum is an annual event where donors, participating countries, NGDOs, TCC, Merck and Co. Inc, External evaluators, WHO secretariat and APOC management meet to discuss the annual implementation and decide on actions to be taken in the next implementation year regarding the control of Onchocerciasis in Africa. WAHO Sub-Regional Forum on HIV/AIDS Ends
The weeklong West African Health Organization (WAHO) Forum on HIV/AIDS jointly organized by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and the National AIDS Secretariat has ended at the Hotel Bintumani in Freetown with an address by the Hon. Minister of Health and Sanitation. The Forum which is centered on Coordination and Advocacy for HIV and AIDS Treatment Programmes in countries in post conflict situations targets Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau and Liberia.

Emergency Surgical Centre Celebrates 5th Anniversary in Sierra Leone
The Italy sponsored Emergency Surgical Centre at Goderich has observed its Fifth Year Anniversary with the award of certificates of recognition to Long Serving staff. Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Minister of Health and Sanitation, the Director of Planning and Information in the ministry, Dr. Clifford Kamara described the Emergency Centre as an active partner of the ministry. Initiative Launched to Accelerate AIDS Prevention in Sierra Leone
The Minister of Health and Sanitation, Hon. Abator Thomas has stated that although HIV/AIDS was currently not curable, fortunately it was preventable and therefore the Government through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation will fast-track activities aimed at preventing the disease. The Minister was speaking at the formal launching of the initiative titled “Accelerate HIV/AIDS Prevention in Sierra Leone” at the Miatta Conference Hall, Youyi Building, Freetown.
