I am an indigene of Tombodu Village, Kamara Chiefdom, Kono district, age 58. I lost my wife late Sia in 1998 during the war. She died in labour, as there was neither a functioning Maternal Health Centre, nor any trained personnel to mid wife her. She was in labour for the whole day, gave birth at 10 p.m. and passed off almost immediately.

I came to Kono in 1989 as CHO. During that time there were scarce medical services for most parts of the peripheral communities; the few PHUs were near collapsing and needed urgent rehabilitation.

Though I speak to you as a lay man as far as health matters are concerned, the advantage I have is that before the local council elections, I was Chairman of the Committee of Management of the Kono District Council and also the Chairman of the Kono District Recovery Committee from March 2000 to May 2004.

Giant Strides at Revitalizing Health Care in Kono District
The diamondiferous district of Kono, eastern Sierra Leone, was about the worst affected by the rebel war. Among the sectors that suffered most spectacularly in the district, was the health sector, which saw the total destruction of the very limited health facilities.
