MISSION STATEMENT

Achieving value for the public’s money.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  •           The need to promote the economy and efficiency in the health sector
  •         Giving all eligible bidders from developed and developing countries equal opportunity to compete in providing quality goods and services to al health institutions in the country
  •     To promote the importance of transparency in the procurement process

ACHIEVEMENTS

The Unit has been able to procure quality drugs and have also acquired sophisticated machinery and equipment for hospitals and health centers. Due to its constant procurement of the above mentioned items, the Unit has been to get reputable contractors that supply them quality drugs and services.

The unit's mission statement which is to achieve value for the public's money has been achieved. Before this time, drugs and other medical supplies were not distributed directly to hospitals and health centers but workers we have been able to deal directly with these institutions.

Under civil works, the unit is currently rehabilitating four district hospitals funded by the World Bank. These districts are Kono, Bombali, Koinadugu and Moyamba. Rehabilitation has also been done on 16 Peripheral Health Units (PHUs) in the district and these units have also been fully equipped through a transparent procurement process.

The Freetown City Council recently benefited a track dozer through one of our recent procurement processes. A total of four dump trucks have donated to Bombali, Kono, Koinadugu and Moyamba for environmental and sanitation purposes.

The unit recently procured four Hilux vans for four District Medical Officers.

It also distributed over five thousand bed nets to under fives and other vulnerable groups free of cost. The Unit has also procured durable and quality computers and other office equipment for the World Bank Information Unit within the Ministry. The four World Bank funded districts also enjoyed this facility.

The unit recently procured vaccines and clinical equipment which are currently being distributed in the various hospitals and health centers.

The services of a private cleaning firm was hired by the unit to clean all the hospitals. This course of action has proven very successful therefore; it intends to extend this service to all hospitals in the district.

All medical drugs, equipment and other logistics for hospitals and clinics are procured by the unit and it also looks into matters of personnel in the areas of discipline and absorption of nurses and doctors.

Future plans

One major plan of the unit is to procure a city scan which could be used to diagnose complicated medical cases. This would reduce the number of patients that are being referred abroad for treatment. There are also plans to undertake a bulk purchasing of computers.

In order to reduce the number of doctors who go abroad to seek for greener pastures, the unit intends to buy vehicles for them as an incentive. Plans are underway to facilitate the training finance of officers in the area of procurement.

The unit aims to fast track the clearing of our good from the quay. Some of these goods are drugs and other logistics which hospitals and health centers are in dire need of.

All undertakings and future plans of the unit will be collated and featured on its website.
