MISSION STATEMENT:  

“To address the problem of poor nutritional status of the population particularly children, using supplementation, a combination of rehabilitation, fortification, and education supplementation ….”

 

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:

The programme seeks to achieve the following objectives:

 

1. To provide micronutrients to vulnerable groups and prevent micronutrient deficiency

 

2. Develop the capacity of district hospitals to manage severe malnutrition

 

3. Intensify nutrition education and mass sensitization

 

4. Strengthen coordination and advocacy for nutrition

 

5. To provide supplementary feeding to vulnerable groups

 

PROGRAMME ACTIVITIES:

The programme seeks to attain its objectives through various activities among them are the following:

 

1.         Conduct National Micronutrient survey

 

2.         Conduct two National Mass campaigns per year to distribute Vitamin A to children 6 -59 months and postpartum women country –wide.

 

3.         Extend coverage of anemia prevention and control to pregnant and lactating mothers and children 6-24 months; train trainers, provide iron and folic acid, Mebendazole and monitor distribution.

 

4.         Sensitize Communities on iodine deficiency disorders and the need to use iodized salt.

 

5.         Develop and reproduce posters and other visual aid materials for mass sensitization on micro-nutrients.  

 

6.         Operationalize routine distribution of Vitamin A supplements to post partum women and children 6-59 months.

 

7.         Study the feasibility for iron fortification in the country.

 

8.         Train Trainer at district level on management of severe malnutrition.

 

9.         Equip PHUS with scales and height boards to screen for malnutrition.

 

10.       Train Trainers on  nutrition surveillance including supplementary feeding at district level. 

 

11.       Procure Bennimix quarterly and distribute to PHUs.

 

12.       Develop and reproduce posters and training manuals on infant and young child feeding, material nutrition, micronutrient deficiency and food hygiene, and distribute country wide.

 

13.       Buy Radio slots for nutrition messages.

 

14.       Conduct sensitization workshops on infant and young child feeding for religious leaders, traditional leaders, opinion leaders and teachers.

 

15.       Train staff in all district hospitals to promote breast feeding and implement the baby-friendly initiative.

 

16.       Conduct  monthly monitoring visits to districts.

 

17.       Conduct orientation meetings for nutrition focal points twice yearly.

 

18.       Hold monthly coordination meetings with partners on nutrition.
