Connaught Hospital Now Gets Echo Cardiogram Machine

Freetown, June 30th 08 (SLENA)- The Humanitarian Organization “Women For Women- Sierra Leone” based in the United States has presented a donation of ECHO Cardiology Machine to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation for use at the Connaught Hospital.

Making the presentation on behalf of the Women For Women Sierra Leone, USA, The International Representative, Dr. Georgiane Abisordun Johnson noted the constraints of Cardiac Specialists in the country and lauded the effort of the Dr. Icilma Fergus, Chief Cardiology, Harlem Hospital Center USA, for donating the ECHO Machine to the Health Ministry.

She underscored the importance of the machine in the area of cardiac examination, hoping that the gesture would be meaningfully utilized.

 

General Surgeon and Surgical Team Leader from New York, Dr. Thomas McIntyre described the system as a type of Ultra Sound to the heart Diagnosis and Treatment that gives a dimension of the functions of the heart, size and all information that would assist the cardiologist for positive use.

Making his remarks, Health and Sanitation, Dr. Soccoh Kabia described the gesture as an invaluable treasure for the Connaught Hospital and the Country noting that Connaught being the major referral lacks such a system for its cardiac operations.

He said the initiative from Women For Women Sierra Leone USA shows patriotism and demonstrates an indication for a standard medical care in Sierra Leone.

 

Dr. Kabia also noted the organization’s Surgical unit established at Yele in the Tonkolili district, and expressed gratitude to the Donor Dr. Icilma Fergus and the entire Women For Women Sierra Leone, hoping that they would continue with the support in other areas including training and human resource development to help complement the Ministry’s effort in addressing capacity building and the brain drain in the medical profession.

 

     

The Connaught Hospital Care Manager and Cardiac Specialist, Rev. Dr. Olu Black described the gesture as a dream comes true “that came as a fruition to revolutionize cardiac diagnostic in Sierra Leone.

 

Head of Surgery Connaught Hospital, Dr. Thaim Buya Kamara described the machine as a life-saving system that would help translate their efforts into the reduction of mortality due to cardiac problem.

 

Cardiologist, Dr. James Russell said with the ECHO Cardiogram they are now at ease to give the public the services they deserve and assured the donor of it judicious use.
