ACHIEVEMENTS

Trainers are trained at district levels and support emergency obstetrics care services at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital, Bo, Kenema, Moyamba, Makeni, Port Loko, Magburaka and Tonkolili Government Hospitals. A good number of doctors have been trained and a total of nine nurse anesthetists have also been trained.

Support is given to staff in areas of clinical activities, provision and distribution of drugs when available and community sensitization. The programme also provides magnesium sulphate for Eclampsia, one of the leading causes of maternal deaths.

The programme's key partners at the district level are the Medical Superintendents, District Medical Officers and District Health Nurses. Obsterics and new born care has been developed for doctors and midwives.

A guideline for emergency obsterics and natal care for doctors and midwives has also been developed. The programme is far into the development of reproductive health policy.

In order to improve on the existing facilities and enhance quality reproductive health care services for the benefit of their patients and clients, a number of projects in districts hospitals have funded by the programme.

The programme has also renovated the maternity unit including the theatre and construction of the temporary ante natal hall done in Makeni Hospital, and eclamptic room and theatre in the Maternity Unit. The Bo Government Hospital has also beeb refirbished.

The Maternity unit including theater in Port Loko Government Hospital was also refurbished; the programme provided ambulances for communities and hospitals.

The programme is in collaboration with UNFPA, Governmental and Non Governmental institutions and other professional bodies to carry out certain activities. This includes the sensitization workshop conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security on community motorized ambulances, Faith Clinic by Jesus Is Lord Ministry, National Aids Secretariat, National Malaria Control Programme, Nutrition Unit and District Health Management Team, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Gender Affairs, IRC, Sierra Leone Prevention of Maternal Mortality Association, Mercy Ships and West Africa Fistula Center. Partnership with professional bodies such as the Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Association, Sierra Leone Midwives Association and Sierra Leone Nurses Association and Marie Stopes.

The improvement of reproductive health status of all Sierra Leoneans requires leadership at the highest level of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation for resource mobilization and subsequent development and implementation of the reproductive health policy.

To ensure contraceptive commodity security

Train and deploy more nurse anesthetists in district hospitals maternity units nationwide.

FUTURE PLANS

STI clinics will be established as soon as possible in all government hospitals throughout the country.

The programme has a staff strength of eleven. this includes an assistant manager who is Dr. Francis Smart.

The programme is located within the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital, Freetown.
