The World Health Conference of 1978, in its Alma-Ata Declaration of 1978 gave recognition to the role of traditional medicine and its practitioners, as it recommended to governments of member states to use all health personnel, including Traditional Health Practitioners for the attainment of Health for All. Ministry of Health and Sanitation National Health Policy Foreword by Hon. Minister of Health Mrs. Abator Thomas
This document sets out the policy of the Government of Sierra Leone motivating and guiding the health sector.The previous health policy was written in 1993, nearly 10 years ago. Since then there have been a number of changes in the context facing the health sector that lead to the need for an updating of that policy. Most obviously, the civil war that the country has suffered has caused major disruption to the health system in terms of damage to physical infrastructure, loss of skilled professionals and, through the wider economic effects, reduction in the real resources available to the health sector.
