Speech by the Hon. Minister at the opening of the Sierra Leone Psychiatric Hospital
I want to inform the nation that the Government of Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation take the delivery of psychiatric care as a serious concern. A Draft Mental Health Policy is now in place. It is hoped that this will direct and enable our collective effort at providing psychiatric care nationwide. The current estimate of those mentally ill is about 150,000 i.e. about 3 per cent of the population. This includes people suffering from depression, situational disturbances, drug and alcohol dependency, trauma, other neuroses as well as the psychoses.

Speech by the Hon. Minister at the Re-opening of the P.C.M. Hospital (April 2006)
We have just come from the re-opening ceremony of Connaught Hospital and we are here to formally re-open these other hospitals to be fully functional. These hospitals, like the sister hospital of Connaught, benefited from a loan from the African Development Bank to rehabilitate the facilities and build staff capacity to deliver quality services. The loan agreement was signed in August 1998 but only became effective in December 1999 because of the rebel war.

Speech by the Hon. Minister at the Re-opening of the Connaught Hospital (April 2006)
As you may all be aware, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has the mandate to provide appropriate, affordable, and quality health care services to all in Sierra Leone and we take this mandate very seriously. Therefore, the crumpling and war battered health infrastructure was of great concern to us, especially when our main national referral hospitals were affected.
